This breakthrough drastically reduced surface reflections and became foundational for modern thin-film optics. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Smakula\">\u0412\u0456\u043a\u0456\u043f\u0435\u0434\u0456\u044f<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lenspire.zeiss.com\/photo\/app\/uploads\/2018\/12\/en_About-the-reduction-of-reflections-of-camera-lenses.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">lenspire.zeiss.com<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Impact and historical context.<\/strong> Early AR-coating methods at Zeiss were kept as a <strong>military secret for several years<\/strong> and were only widely disseminated after World War II. ZEISS later branded the technology in its <strong>T<\/strong>* coating lineage; contemporary ZEISS histories credit Smakula\u2019s coating with markedly improving image transmission (e.g., on binoculars). <a href=\"https:\/\/opticaorgdev.blob.core.windows.net\/%24web\/optica\/media\/osa.history\/century_of_optics\/1941-1959\/68.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">opticaorgdev.blob.core.windows.net<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.zeiss.com\/sports-optics\/hunting\/en\/from-small-workshop-to-global-player-part-2\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">blogs.zeiss.com<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Academic career.<\/strong> After the war, Smakula moved to the <strong>United States<\/strong>; by <strong>1951<\/strong> he joined the <strong>Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)<\/strong>, where he pursued research on crystalline materials. He died in <strong>Auburn, Massachusetts<\/strong> in 1983.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Why this matters for ICPTTFN\u2013XX.<\/strong> Smakula\u2019s AR coatings are a classic and enduring example of <strong>thin-film engineering<\/strong> driven by optical-interference design \u2014 a core topic for our community.
